As with many 'how to write' books, Carole Blake (From Pitch to Publication, McMillan 1999) advises authors to join a writers group. She says, "It is essential to remember that you only get out of Writers' circles what you put in. You must be prepared to read and criticise others' work, have an open mind about the comments you receive and be prepared rework your material."
The advantages of the Sorcerer's Writers Circle are:
- We 'meet' on the airways from the comfort of our own homes.
- You know here members so you know who is reading your work and so there is less risk of someone plagiarising your work.
- There is no risk of you inadvertently publishing your work as may happen a Web Site.
- Members have more time to consider your work and therefore give more considered reviews.
- The reviews are private between author and reviewer, they are not shared or published on a web site.
- No-one owns the group because we all have each others e-mail addresses.
- You can make personal friends with members as you choose and we all become friends over time.
The Sorcerer's Circle:
- Is not limited to a particular genre, the one you choose is welcome.
- Each Sunday receives a short story or book chapter from one or two of its members.
- may discuss technical issue about writing from character formation to submitting to a publisher.
- wants to see its members successfully publish.
- recognises that from time to time members have other demands on their lives.
The name Sorcerers was chosen by the members to acknowledged that besides good writing skills it takes a little magic to be a good writer.
