For a class I recently taught I contacted some mates in the business to get an update on what opportunities are available for new writers from the Film and TV industry.
I have to say I was terribly disappointed to learn how many broadcasters, major production companies and even the Film Council are now ONLY willing to look at submissions from established Producers and Agents.
If you are a writer (new or established) and hope to get your work in front of the people with the money to get it made it's more important than ever to have a good agent.
Of course "How can I get an agent?" is possibly the most frequently asked question in writing circles. This is followed by the complaint that it's a "Catch 22" situation -
No track record? No chance of getting an Agent.
No Agent? No chance of getting a track record.
I normally cover this in the class I do. However, as it's getting so tough for new talent at the moment I thought I'd pass on the handout I use for the class to anyone who would like a copy.
It's based on talking to the top 5 agencies about how they like to be approached and outlines the system that I and other writers I know used to secure representation.
Of course you have to have talent! But your work wont even get read when you send it in if you don't approach them in the right way.
The approach I outline has proven to be very successful but ONLY and I emphasise ONLY, if you are willing to do all the work. Do not try and cut corners and skip any of the steps involved.
Of course other people will have employed other methods and you still need talent, but this will at least help you to avoid the big mistakes and put you on an even playing field.
If you would like to get a Free copy of the handout just email us at info@meadkerr.com and we'll email it to you.
