Membership of the Cannon Hill Writers' group - £20 p.a., decreasing throughout the rest of the year from January. £2 per meeting for members, £3 non members (concessions).
Weekly meetings, monthly workshops, advice & literary criticism, practice giving a reading, varied and multi genre, scripts, lyrics, plays, novels, poetry & prose, experienced and new writers.
Every Thursday 8 - 10pm, in the creche at the MAC (Midlands Arts Centre) Cannon Hill, opposite the Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Our meeting room has disabled access which is 'good' - but wheel chair users sometimes find the bar area difficult to circumnavigate.
We are a self help writing group with a range of writers, from the beginner to the 'slightly' published. The existing membership is diverse, and this group wants to welcome new members whatever their background and genre. Within the group completed mss and work in progress is read out for feed back, suggestions and positive criticism. Markets may be suggested and competition details circulated. Past members of this group have gone on to have plays on radio, books published, stories in magazines, become prize winners in local and national competitions, and one ex-member has been a Birmingham Poet Laureate.
Competitions
The group has its own in-house competitions from time to time. To enter one needs to be a member. The next one will be on the last Thursday before Christmas, judged by the group, with modest prizes presented by one of the founder members, Chair & author Pauline Morgan. The title is 'Moon' and should be no longer than 2000 words, poems and plays also accepted.
Workshops
Future workshops are planned from - Roi Kwabena, Birmingham Poet Laureate; Phil Coker, Librarian Hall Green Library Poetry Place; Chris Morgan, Author and ceative writing teacher; Helena Hampstead, playwright and songstress; John Henry Foley, poet; and from a short story agency for national magazines, Midlands Exposure Literary Agency, in the new year.
