The British Guild of Beer Writers was founded in 1988. It aims to improve standards in beer writing and extend public knowledge of beers and brewing. It publishes a directory of members with details of their publications and areas of interest. This is circulated to newspapers, magazines, trade press and broadcasting organisations.
The Guild offers annual awards - The Gold and Silver Tankard Awards - to writers and broadcasters judged to have made the most valuable contribution to this end in their work.
Meetings are held every two months or so in conjuction with visits to breweries, malsters, hop growers etc. An annual seminar is held on a subject allied to the brewing industry and beer, to which are also invited interested parties from the industry.
There is a monthly newsletter which is distributed to 130+ members (including corporate members). There are no local groups but members are spread across the UK and even Europe.
