Writing Competition for physically handicapped children

In 2002 Ashton Writers held a writing competition for the students of Mere Oaks School. Mere Oaks is an SLD school for severely physically handicapped children and is where Chris Wood, the current chair of Ashton, works.

The theme of the competition was 'colour'. The prizes were tokens and publication on the web. The children suffer varying degrees of handicap and many need assistance from an adult. This was taken into account during the judging. The competition was open to all children in the upper school.

The winner was Zara Marsden aged 11. Zara is a very chatty young lady with a lively imagination. Read Zara's story by clicking here.

The runner-up was Tomas Corless aged 12. Tomas is a very observant person and very skilled in origami. Read Tomas's story by clicking here.

Click here to read The Sooperdooper Blue Electric Wheelchair by Matthew Chamberlain, aged 13.
